"Are you a rock star?"
"You should be a rock star. You've got the look. Do you play guitar ?
You should. And you've got the pretty girl, too." - some guy on an
escalator at Davis.
I finally ordered a bicycle and bought sandals today, thanks to Kaz.
The sandals are Tevas, which I didn't think I'd ever own, but I like
these.
I am very interested in feedback on this bike, since I still
have time to change my mind. My primary reason for it is hopes of
regularly commuting the 4.4 miles, mostly along Mass. Ave., to work.
I chose a mountain bike because I'd like to do mountain biking,
and I wanted something I can beat on without breaking too easily.
So I plan to get street tires for commuting. I ended up ordering a
Specialized
Rockhopper (the base model, and I object to the brand name), blue 21",
for $524.99 total.
A week ago I finally got out kayaking. A couple of good friends were
in the area, who had recently bought kayaks. I got a recommendation
that we try
Charles
River Canoe & Kayak's Newton location. So we did. For 3 hours.
It was very good. The guy asked me if I'd kayaked before, I thought
for a moment, then said "No." He asked if I wanted a beginner/stable
kayak then. I said "No." Then he asked if I wanted a touring kayak,
and I said yes. So he gave me a Necky Eskia - fast, but more stable than
a couple they had. This is what I spent almost all of the 3 hours in.
I really enjoyed the time. I really liked the speed / stability of
the Eskia, and the fact that I could comfortably bring my knees up -
which I think would be good for day trips on the ocean (which I really
want to do). After we got back, I tried out the two kayaks my friends
had brought, a Necky Elaho, which was skinnier. A little less stable,
which didn't bother me, but I couldn't comfortably bring my knees up.
I tried another, but I didn't like it, and don't remember what it was.
My arms were so incredibly sore that night. I believe that's the first
time I took painkillers (advil) for sore muscles. When I got in bed, I
was quite miserable any time I moved, but I was okay when I'd been still
for a couple minutes. Of course then I'd shift and be miserable again.
But it was all quite worth it, and I really want to go on one of CRCK's
ocean day trips. I've been wanting to buy a kayak for the majority of
my life. I'm particularly interested in those by Wilderness Systems,
because of how nice their seats are. Of course, I'd prefer their most
expensive touring kayak, which is way too expensive. Due to my habit
of obsessing then loosing interest in some things, it is sounding like
it might be good to rent for a season, and then try to hit the fall
kayak sales.
