Never to be seen again by the light of day....

I finally got internet access to my apartment.

I've been here, what, 6 weeks ? I had been planning to get speakeasy dsl, since they provide static IPs and permission to host servers, and host one of my servers here. I couldn't deal with paying $16.72, absolute minimum, extra to the phone company to have a phoneline I didn't want so that I could have DSL, as I was told I would need to. I figured I'd try getting the phoneline, having the DSL connected, disconnecting the phoneline, and seeing if the DSL continued to work - since I've actually seen this work elsewhere. So I got the phoneline hooked up maybe a week ago. I then decided that it wasn't going to work out, because in the situation where it did, dedicated copper had been run, and in my case, that wasn't going to happen. Pinkee was very helpful in making this decision, with her experience working in COs and NOCs. So I ordered cablemodem access, and canceled the phoneline. Downloads are over twice as fast as my DSL was. I'm happy with it so far - got hooked up today.

One of the wonderful things about king sized pillows is that when I put my hands behind my head, the pillow supports all the way out to my elbows. Highly recommended.

A couple days ago I was contemplating that my new medium sized automatic opening umbrella had served me quite well during the short time I've had it. I bought it in a Walgreens up here, since I'm relying on public transportation and walking a lot - figured it'd be good to have something bigger than my super compact teensy umbrella. So it broke on me. Bitch. I had it opened up, and was studying it - looking at how it worked and stuff. I noticed one of the parts was a bit bent - one of the longer, thicker metal rods. So I pushed a little on the joint to straighten it out, and the joint basically exploded. I was quite displeased. I duct taped the hell out of it. That made it a little better. I removed the duct tape, got a wire hanger and some wire cutters, braced it, then re-duct taped the hell out of it. It's good now. Any suggestions on where I could find a wonderful umbrella, of any size, that will not be destroyed by inversion, and will survive regular wear, would be appreciated.

I finally got to a Poly Boston social last night. Loneliness has been getting to me. So I stayed at work 6 hours late, catching up on the mailing list and posting, and the post still hasn't gotten to the list. Went to the social. The people were very cool. Having this weekly event is a definite improvement on my life, and much appreciated relief from some stress I've been dealing with.
