Pepper spray is good.

Pepper spray is good.
Pinkee and I were going into her apartment to get more to bring over
to my house. As we were approaching the main entrance, two well dressed,
large, black, noticeably drunk men got to the door. They were trying to
figure out which intercom button to push when one commented that we,
who appeared to be residents, would be able to unlock the front door.
Pinkee, very politely, told them that she couldn't let them in because she
had no reason to believe they belonged in there. She did not recognize
them as residents, they obviously had no key, and the name they mentioned
did not even belong to a resident. The response was "Fuck her man!
Fuck them!", as one tried to force his way into the building. I had
to slam the door shut to keep them out. The door latched and locked,
and then bulged as one of them slammed into it.
We went inside. It turned out that pinkee's fingers happened to
be under the heel of my hand as I slammed the door, so they hurt.
I felt bad, but she did not seem to mind. When we got in, pinkee
commented that she was not too eager to go back outside immediately
(which had been our plan). I agreed, and suggested that we sit down
and relax for a bit. We discussed things like calling the police -
she pointed out that that wouldn't go well if the guys left before
the police arrived. I quickly became very unhappy with feeling like
pinkee and I were prisoners in her own apartment. I suggested we go
on with our business, and I pepper spray them if necessary. She agreed.
I decided that if they seemed to be approaching striking range, I'd just
spray them without hesitation. We picked up the things we came for,
and headed out the door, with my spray in my hand. I opened the door
cautiously, and looked around quickly. They weren't there. We finished
our business and left. We were both quite shaken, and it was a while
before I could think clearly about anything but immediate physical safety.
Pinkee's fingers are fine now.
This is why I carry pepper spray - to have a non-lethal alternative
incase of a rather unpleasant but possibly not life-threatening situation.
Because I had a small canister of pepper spray with me, we continued to
go about our lives like free people instead of prisoners of a pair of
drunk violent people.
I encourage you to pick some up - it's easy to
order off the
internet, or buy at any gun shop. It comes in canisters designed to
attach to your keychain, which are tiny enough to do so quite reasonably.
I find myself wondering, if I had not succeeded in shutting the door,
would I have remembered my spray in time ?
Read
pinkee's account of these events.
Update (9 years later): An important detail I previously omitted: I was also wearing a loaded gun.
