I got a thing in my ear

Years ago, I started wanting to get my ear pierced. I told this to Ann, at a place I once worked. I was thinking about just getting it done at a mall booth, since that seemed the easiest to arrange. She was... strongly against that. She drug me to Infinite Body Piercing. I am thankful. I have heard numerous times that the piercing guns are baaad - very difficult, and therefore unlikely to be properly sterilized, and they damage the tissue, increasing chances of infection. Or something.

Infinite, at my request, put a (teensy) 16 guage fixed bead ring in my earlobe. It's been there since (1998).

Recently, as you may have read, I met pinkee. She pierced professionally for 3 years, roughly a year of that was spent managing Infinite, and she has apparently put many thousands of holes in many many people.

She has rather enjoyed teasing me that when she and I met, I stated numerous times that I was not interested in getting any more holes in me.

I started getting interested. Then I saw this picture in Infinite's gallery: jeffcap.jpg

I really liked the ring in the middle of the guy's left ear. It's a conch piercing. Serious cartilage. I decided I wanted one.

Wednesday (7/4/01), at a barbecue at N-Tropy's, pinkee took a 4mm (6 guage) chunk out of my ear with a biopsy punch. Yes, it hurt.

She brought all her gear, and sterilized everything, in the middle of his marble foyer floor. There were a few spectators - friends.

A biopsy punch is a cylindrical metal blade on a plastic handle - all disposable. It is designed for removing chunks of flesh for testing.

I realized there was some possibility I might pass out. I was okay with that.

She put a cork behind my ear, put the punch up to it, and told me to breath, and that she'd do it on the exhale.

It was crunchy. I'd heard it would be. It sounded about as expected. Crunchy. Odd. I could hear the punch going through the different layers.

I was told my head/neck stiffened noticeably, and I straightened my legs out a bit.

The pain was pretty significant, but very short lived. She took the punch out, and put the barbell in. She asked if I felt the cold, I wondered what she was talking about, and then I felt cold spreading from the piercing. It was from putting the jewelry in. Felt really neat, in a wound that felt rather warm.

Then she asked that somebody get me a drink. I wondered why. N-Tropy asked "water?", she said no, that doesn't have sugar. Then I realized I didn't feel so good. When I later asked, Pinkee told me that if it weren't for the Coke N-Tropy got me, I probably would have passed out.

None of us thought about the fact that I hadn't eaten in... too long. After I drank the majority of the soda, I asked if I could lay down - and did, on the marble floor, with a carpeted step for a pillow. I stayed there quite comfortable for some time. I didn't feel particularly bad, just not up for.. much of anything. I eventually felt up for walking to a mirror, and asked permission. pinkee said I looked okay, and said that should be fine.

She commented that I bleed very little. So I clot well, and am not a bleeder. This is good.

It came out good. I'm happy with it. I have a 6ga barbell in it. When it heals, it will be replaced with a captive bead ring. pinkee said the barbell would heal better.

In the mean time, I continue to think about 5 to 6 other holes I'm wanting :)
