Long range rifle silliness at an indoor range.
Sun May 27 22:12:04 EDT 2001
I've been looking forward to getting my
Remington 700P rifle back out to a range
since, well, the last time I've had it to a range. I couldn't wait to
go yesterday (Saturday, 5/26). Then I woke up to rain, which made me
very unhappy. While I do, at some point, want very much to try shooting in
the rain, I was not in the mood for this yesterday. So I continued on my
plans to pick up my new gun case which my rifle has really been deserving,
and visiting my baby sister, who got somewhat upsettingly hurt recently.
I just skipped the part about going to the range afterward, and instead,
headed over to
N-tropy's. He bought
a 30-some inch tv, and then expected us to help him put it in his house :)
It was fun. There were friends there. I finally saw all of the
Dune series (the new Dune movie thing), which was good. Ended at 6am.
I got home at 7am. That's late for me.
When I finally got home, I wished I hadn't stayed up so late watching
movies, because I found out other friends of mine were heading to
Classic Pistol (an indoor range) the next day
(Sunday, today), hoping to get there between 2-3pm. I told them my
chances of getting up in time for that after crashing rather late were
slim, but we'd see what happened. I don't know why, but I happened
to wake up on time, without an alarm clock. Perhaps its because it
had been a whole two weeks since I'd gotten to a gun range. It was,
of course, fun. There were 6 of us. Another friend of mine,
Beldon, finally came
along for the first time. Nice variety of guns. I decided to bring
along my
Remington 700P, which I had been arguing it was silly to
bring to a 25 yard range, because this gun is known to be accurate
to within 1" at 100 yards. 25 yards is 1/4 of 100 yards. That means
my
700P should be accurate to within 0.25" at 25 yards. The bullets
are 0.308" in diameter. That means a bullet grouping tighter than the
diameter of the bullet, and that is silly.
I fired 3 shots at a piece of paper. They all went in the same hole.
I do believe I have proved my point.
They were not perfectly centered, as I did not take the time to zero
it at 25 yards. I didn't have a ruler with me, so I didn't consider
it worth my time and effort, since I don't expect to ever shoot it at
such a short range again. But it was fun to prove the point. I kept
the target.
