Lots of guns and violence. Free outdoor ranges are cool.

My weekend turned out to be lots of fun. Lots of guns and violence.
Saturday night, me, Doug, and Ed played
Total Annihilation.
Sunday I discovered something wonderful - Doug took me & Ed to a
free outdoor range in a park. You can set
up targets at 25, 50, or 100 yards. The place is completely unstaffed.
The rules said something like, if more than one person is shooting, a
range master shall be designated. It was really cool. Everyone there
was safety conscious and friendly. There were maybe 7 other people while
we were there at least part of the time we were. Every once in a while,
everyone would stop shooting, make sure everybody put their guns down,
and go change targets.
I've been shooting my
Kimber at 20 yards,
so 25 was fine for me with my
Kimber.
The targets we were using were too small for my less than wonderful
vision at 100 yards with iron sights. Doug brought a scoped .223 rifle,
that was really neat. I got maybe a 2" group (6 shots) at 100 yards.
It had a bipod.
Doug also brought an
AR-15 (M16)
pistol. That's right. Take an AR-15 (also known as an M16), remove
the barrel and stock, and put about a foot long barrel on it. Very neat.
Very little recoil, big ball of fire.
I fired an
Uzi
for the first time. Got to handle a few more SKS & AK type things,
and another AR-15, and a
Mossberg
shotgun with a pistol grip and a heat shield - 12 guage, short barrel
(compared to my 20" w/ 8 round mag).

I've been looking into rifles for a while - deciding between
a semi-auto assault rifle of some kind, and a bolt action, for my
next purchase. Among Bolt actions, I've been most interested in the
Remington
700s. Among semi-auto assault rifles, I'd been leaning
toward AR-10/15s. I'm currently leaning very strongly
towards a
Remington 700P in
.308 Winchester - The
Police Sniper Special. I like the color scheme.
I recently had a friend state very strongly that the
only assault rifle he'd be interested in would be a "real"
AK-47. Strong opinions can be
influential. I don't think the
AKs are
very pretty. This combination may have helped sway me towards the
Remingtons more (which I do think
are very
pretty).
Probably the biggest factor influencing my interest in
Remington
700 hunting rifles is that, in .308 winchester, they are used by
the U.S. Army and Marine Corps as light sniper rifles.
I was originally disappointed that it didn't seem like any
Remington
700s came with detachable magazines. I eventually discovered that
"DM" in Remington model numbers means "Detachable Magazine" - and
they're available. There's even a Remington 700P DM. As I continued
my research, I found that folks who are fond of the reliability and
simplicity of bolt action rifles tend to strongly dislike detachable
magazines - more moving parts to break / clean / lose. So I think I'll
be going with the non-DM model.
So now I'm looking into scopes. Pretty sure I'll be going with
a
Leupold - probably the
Vari-X III 4.5-14x40mm
tactical (part #49208). But I've still only actually looked through
1 scope - Doug's, and I have no idea what it was. So I have research
yet to do.
I expect the selection of a bipod to be less challenging. Probably a
Harris.
