Stereo Receiver
Two days ago, Friday March 2nd, It was decided that I needed
to buy a receiver to replace the very old one that I had - which had
built in record and 8-track players (I'm not kidding). A couple friends
and I went to an audio place near work. Very nice. Huge. Expensive.
I told the guy I thought I wanted to buy a Sony receiver. He showed me
a couple. They were.. way higher than I wanted to pay for. We decided to
go to another shop a couple of us had been to a few times - Brywn Mawr.
Called ahead to see if they had the model I was specifically interested
in in stock. They said they didn't carry that series, I asked which they
carried, and it turned out the equivalent in the series they carried
sounded a lot better. So we went. Turned out, they had none of those
in stock. Bastards.
Turned out an old friend of one of the other guys was working there.
I'd met him before. He was cool. He showed me a couple other receivers
that were similar. But I was pretty set on the Sony. He told me there
was one available at a store closer to where I lived, and that I could buy
it at the store I was at, and pick it up at the one closer to my house.
That sounded good enough. Found the other guys, and the pointed out a
receiver to me. It was an open box special. The best of the receivers
the guy showed me at the other place, which was more expensive than I
was interested in. And it cost almost exactly as much as the list price
for the lower end model I was about to buy.
Awesome.
I bought it.
We then argued over who should buy the very nice DVD/CD changer that
was also on an open box sale. I didn't get that one.
Unfortunately, when I got home much later (5am?), it didn't work.
:(
About 10 seconds after powering on, about when the sound should
kick in, it started blinking something like "PROTECTION (FAN)", and
would do nothing else.
The next day, I called the salesman and told him "My receiver
won't go." Ended up taking it to a shop in center city and exchanging
it for another open-box. Got the guy to show me it worked before I left.
Took it home and..... it is awesome.
