More of the kitten. (days 2-4)
Tue May 30 10:37:55 EDT 2000
When I left off, it was a little after 5pm on Sunday night, and my
kitten was in the kitchen. I don't know how long it took me to find him
this time, but, again, I only found him because of his mewing. Under the
fridge. I would not have guessed he would fit under the fridge. Ended up
getting a brick, tilting the fridge to the side, & scooting the brick
under the fridge so I could reach under & pull him out. He is so good at
getting dirty. I decided to keep him in my bedroom instead of the kitchen
that night. Took his bowls (which are attached) & his litter box up to my
room, and showed him where they were.
We curled up in bed. He seemed happy. At some point he seemed to be
trying to get off of the bed. I figured he needed to get to the litter
box. I put him in his litter box. He walked under a dresser. I pulled
him out from under the dresser, and climbed back in bed with him. He leapt
off the bed, and used the litter box (I'm guessing he'd gone under the
dresser to wait for me to go a way so he could have some privacy).
He did a lot of exploring that night. I left the light on the whole
night so I could see what he was doing. not long after he used the litter
box, I heard some scratching near me on the bed. At first, I was kind of
irritated. I thought he was sharpening his claws on the bed or something,
and was considering how to deal with this. I looked over the edge of the
bed, and his cute little face popped up right in front of mine -- he was
climbing up the side of the bed. I reached down and scootched him up. I
was so happy! This was the first time that he came to me, instead of me
digging him out of some crevice. He climbed on top of me, I started
petting him, and he purred lots. I was happy.
He leapt off & climbed back on the bed quite a few times throughout the
night. I propped a large mirror covered in a blanket up against the bed
at about a 45 degree angle, so he could get up & down easier, and put him
on it to demonstrate. He went down it. He went up & down that way a
couple times, but seemed to prefer leaping off & scaling the side of the
bed.
His acrobatics were pretty entertaining. He climbed up onto the
foot board where it was lowest, walked about a foot over (on the 1" wide
foot board) to line up with a chair, jumped onto the chair, jumped up onto
the back of the chair, and then jumped up onto the blankets on the cedar
chest. From there, he jumped to a higher pile of blankets and played with
the mirror hanging there for a while. Then he jumped up onto a high
dresser, about 5' tall. When getting down, he tried going back the way he
came -- jumping from the blankets on the cedar chest to the back of the
chair. It didn't work. He landed on the back of the chair, & slipped.
He then jumped up onto the bed with a wet butt. He'd landed in his water
bowl :)
But I think the most amusing part was when he jumped up on the cedar
chest, then jumped up on the wide/short dresser thing, and then jumped up
on my shirt that was hanging on the closet door! So he's hanging there,
on my shirt, dangling in midair, and looks over at me like, "um, mew
?" And I'm like, "dude, what were you thinking ?", and walk over & pick
him up off my shirt. I seriously need a camera.
I actually managed to leave the house yesterday, to go to a... how do
you spell bar-b-q ? Left him alone for about.. 9 hours. I had no idea
where he was in my room when I left, but I figured I'd leave him alone.
He had food, water, and a litter box. I worried about him lots the whole
time, of course. I was pretty sure I'd have to pry him out of some corner
when I got home, and he'd be upset at me for leaving. I was very
pleasantly surprised when I got home though -- he was curled up happily on
my bed.
Last night was more activity similar to the night before. A bit less
acrobatic though.
He started playing with me Sunday night. Play biting and grabbing my
fingers gently with his claws. It was fun. He did a lot more of this
last night.
The sad part is his mewing when he looks around my room. It seems like
he's trying to find his siblings. And I feel like he'd have a lot more
fun playing with them than me.
Now I haven't slept with the lights off in 3 nights, the last 2 of
which I had a kitten entertaining me and waking me up periodically the
whole night. I'm sure that when I get an opportunity to let this sink in
I'll collapse from exhaustion. But it's been lots of fun.
And he's such a good kitty.
